Thank you for listening to The Champion Forum Podcast with Jeff Hancher! What could a leader learn from the story of a potato farmer? The journey to your goals is likely challenging and lonely, but finding ways to engage your motivation and stay committed is crucial. I know how hard it can be to keep moving forward, but I heard this story at just the right time. Now, I want to share it with you. Today on The Champion Forum Podcast, I share some timely lessons I learned from a potato farmer and how you can apply those principles to your leadership journey.
Four Ways To Keep Running Toward Your Goals
1. Just get started!
It can be challenging to tackle another project or idea when you lack momentum. So, start small. Do something simple and quick to overcome your fear of starting.
2. Make incremental progress.
Once you begin, the next step is to focus on progress. Come up with small milestones you can celebrate as you move toward your goal.
3. Don’t overcomplicate it.
Complexity has killed many great ideas. Simple solutions are almost always better.
4. Focus on the finish line!
This fear of success is more common than you think. By focusing on the finish line and nothing else, you can free yourself from overthinking what’s next and instead take things one step ata time.
Q: What did you think of the story of Cliff Young finishing the race? What do you think helped propel him to success? What encouraged you most about his story?
Q: What do you think keeps you from achieving your goals? Do you find it harder to get started, stay consistent, or finish strong? Based on today's episode, what can you do to help overcome that hurdle? What would you add to the discussion?
Application Activities:
Is there a goal you have procrastinated on? Find a way to get started! If you want to get in shape, sign up for a 5k or other event to encourage you just to get started. Register for the class or online training you have been putting off, and pick a start date! By attaching a time commitment, you will be more likely to overcome the fear of starting and just begin!
Take some time to brainstorm solutions to your biggest challenges with your team. Most of the challenges that slow us down can be distilled into simple components. Identify one or two components of your challenges that are easy to solve. You may not be able to solve the problem completely, but you will find that by getting started, you can generate momentum and then tackle the more complex difficulties you face.
